David Sartorius

David Sartorius is a doctoral candidate in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is currently completing a dissertation entitled "Limits of Loyalty: Race and the Public Sphere in Cienfuegos, Cuba, 1850-1898" under the direction of Louis A. Prez, Jr. A native of Kansas, he completed his undergraduate education in history and art history at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where he first became interested in the history of Latin America and the Caribbean. He conducted research for his dissertation in Cuba, the United States, and Spain with the support of the Lydia Cabrera Foundation, the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the Graduate School and the Department of History at the University of North Carolina. As of September 2003, David will be Assistant Professor of History at Whittier College in California.
